It was a beautiful hike. Heading back was a little tougher than heading out but not crazy. Felt like 2 or 3 totally different hikes as we progressed down the trail. Was not super into this trail though we were excited to try it based on other reviews and notes. It was partly sunny when we hiked at am on a Saturday morning and was more exposed in parts than we expected. The river was also very faint in the distance or unnoticeable for much of our hike.
We saw some bear tracks — some older, some more fresh. Just before the 3-mile mark our dog stopped and would no longer go forward. This is unusual behavior so we followed her instincts and turned back. There was one other car at the trailhead when we arrived and only a few more people around when we finished.
This may be the perfect Colorado hiking trail. The trail is wide and clearly marked. You will never once go off route or be confused about which way to go. The elevation change is gradual and never really kicks your butt like a steep hike does.
The hike goes through a national forest with lots of trees and constant shade. The trail ends at a beautiful section of the river. If you can handle a 7 mile hike I can't recommend this hike enough. I plan to keep going back again and again! Easy side of moderate. Very pleasant the last portion of the trail right up against the river.
Beautiful trail with an even more beautiful ending point at the river. We were there on a Wednesday morning and there was only one other group of hikers.
The trail was great. Well manicured and not very rocky and so easy to go through. We camped and went fishing throughout the weekend and there were more people than we would have liked. There was little to no privacy.
Next time we will do a harder trail to hopefully reduce the popularity. This was an easy, beautiful trail. Easy to get to; very limited parking so I'd get there early. Some ups-and-downs but nothing strenuous. Even though you don't get to the river until about mile 2. The section that goes along the river is just lovely. Several nice campsites down there if you want to backpack in.
Was a fun and peaceful hike, conditions were great and I'd say the trail isn't too difficult to complete. Snow packed in places, mushy mostly but some places were steep and slick- would have liked poles or spikes in places, but just lovely today- a Sunny Sunday and I saw 1 hiker.
March There was one other vehicle there and we only saw a few people on the trail. Took us about 4 hours with pee and snack breaks. No litter or poop bags.
This trail was very beautiful! The trial was mostly packed down snow, but definitely a few slick spots. We hiked it without spikes and it was manageable, but spikes would have made it easier!
We could hear someone shooting a shotgun very close to the trail assuming target practice? I am assuming it was on private land in the canyon, but our dog was freaked out as were we! Beyond that, it was a beautiful hike and lovely day! Solid trail, very clearly marked. The pictures and trail name can be deceiving - Very little of this trail is along the river. I recommend good hiking boots that support the ankle, and maybe trekking poles if you lose your balance easily.
Saw 3 other groups on the way back in, 1 dog. No one on the way out. Excellent trail well marked, nice views, not too steep and good length. Saw a few fisher people but no one else hiking today. Really lovely trail, especially once you arrive at the river. Well maintained and took me about 3 hours out and back. Only saw a handful of people on a Wednesday midday.
Nice Hike. Nice trail. Uphill both ways. Started on the trail around am. Weather was great. But Platte River was not always as pleasing as what it is today, it was once polluted and ignored until efforts to rehabilitate it was done in This multi-use out-and-back trail is suitable for all skill levels and is frequented by hikers, bicyclists, skaters, and longboarders all year round.
Then, at 1. Up ahead on the Y-junction, stay left and access 8th Avenue through an uphill ramp. Onwards, turn left to cross the river towards Frog Hollow Park and to Milstein Park where you can see amazing river views.
Though the official National Recreation Trail ends there, the pathway continues to stretch nearly 20 miles ahead at your disposal. Have no fear, though, as the farther south you traverse the more agreeable the surroundings become. Just take a look at the bustling LoDo area, where green spaces like Commons Park and the Centennial Gardens offer a lush, floral compliment to the city skyline and pedestrian-friendly Highland Bridge.
Perhaps its most appealing feature, however, is the fact that that lengthy and vertically-oriented South Platte River intersects with a host of surrounding tributary trails along its course, meaning you can easily use it to navigate almost anywhere in and around Denver.
