Check the fuel level. If the lighter is out of fuel, throw it away. Disposable lighters are not meant to be refilled. You should be able to get up to 3, lights from a full-sized Bic lighter. If the flint wheel is stuck, your flint is most likely used up, and the wheel is striking the follower, causing a jam. A gas stove will, of course, work, as will a gas barbecue. A well-known alternative to using a lighter is to use your toaster. It also works with a toaster-oven. Just be careful because you have to get your face right in there.
If the lighter burns for too long, it will overheat, to the danger of your hand and any flammable surroundings. Referring to the instructions for your exact lighter model will give you the most specific and helpful advice.
If this does not work, the burner may be clogged; clean it with a blast of compressed air. The only way to definitively solve either problem is by emptying the lighter and refilling it with fresh butane. The butane lighter is low on fluid and needs a refill.
I would get so pissed off watching my lighter hiss and sputter or worse not even light at all. Nowadays I can troubleshoot most problems and fix them in a couple of minutes and all it took was a little bit of learning.
First off, do you have the instruction booklet that comes with most torch lighters? If so, check it out and see what troubleshooting steps your particular lighter has. Not sure if you have fuel in it? A torch lighter that is hissing when you depress the trigger means the fuel is going in the right direction. That would be outside my ability to help so get with the manufacturer. When you hit the trigger and get nothing but a hiss you might have the flame setting too high.
Try lowering the flame setting and see what happens. This is another common torch lighter not working issue. Conversely, if you hit the trigger and either hear a low hiss or nothing at all try turning up the flame adjuster and see what happens.
If after adjusting your flame up or down are you still just getting a hiss or are you getting a flash and a hiss? First off, the worst-case scenario would be that the ignition is dead. More commonly, the igniter end might be dirty. I use a can of compressed air to blow over and clean the end of the igniter when I have a torch lighter not working properly.
