In the edition of the Hobart race, which started on December 26, Wild Oats XI again won through with the aid of the latest technology: she was the first international ocean racing yacht to carry a hydrofoil-type wing, a feature designed to provide lift to her bow, and therefore deliver greater speed when sailing downwind. This was pioneered successfully in , and proved once again to give her an advantage over the fleet in the edition of the race. Apart from being first to finish on nine occasions, she was also the first yacht ever to take four back to back straight line honours.
In , after she was lengthened to ft, the supermaxi surrendered her line honours crown to the almost identical Alfa Romeo, but returned to her winning ways the following year. Wild Oats XI is the holder of the race record, which she took in when she won the treble, in the time of 1 day 18hrs 40mins 10secs - the only boat to win the treble since Rani in the first race in Bob Oatley's super maxi also holds the record for the most consecutive line honours wins - four - from until , surpassing Morna's record of three in a row achieved from In , Wild Oats XI, along with a couple of others, underwent extensive modifications to increase her overall length from 98ft to ft, in accordance with the rule changes to extend the maximum length overall of yachts to ft.
Her time for the nautical mile course was 1 day, 18 hours, 40 minutes, and 10 seconds, more than an hour inside the previous record. That elapsed time was 16 minutes, 58 seconds inside her previous mark. While this does not sound like much, the fractional gain in speed could contribute to her being between 15 and 30 minutes faster over the nautical mile course to Hobart. She was also fitted with new sails made from a revolutionary, non-stretch, ultra-light fabric.
