Not one who lives in the past. Yet to Mr. Was the judge then murdered because the murderer had remembered who he was? You never took a thing in this place.
Oh, yes, I know that. There was a saint once —went out with bread for the poor. Met her and asked what there was in her basket. She lost her nerve and said it was roses — he tore open her basket and roses it was — a miracle! You mistake me entirely.
I am suggesting no disparagement of a guest of yours. I was merely pointing out that a hardened and brutal criminal can be in appearance a most charming and personable young man. Odd, but so it is. MacWhirter sees instantly that the rope invalidates Nevile's alibi: he could have swam across the bay, climbed the rope he left hanging out a window, killed Lady Camilla, and swam back to the other side again in time to meet Ted Latimer. Then he brings the whole group out on a boat in the bay, and confronts Nevile with the truth: he always hated Audrey for divorcing him, and the murder of Lady Camilla was his plan to have Audrey tortured and hanged! Nevile falls apart; it's all true.
Nevile was the "little murderer" that Treves recognized. Time had not changed him; he was still a murderer. Audrey finds him packing, and proposes that they get married and travel together. That's just fine in MacWhirter's opinion, and they go off into the sunset together! The faked evidence took me in just as it was intended to!
Likewise, the ending was satisfactory: all the characters fell in love. Although I felt a lot of pity for Kay, because she seemed to really love Nevile.
