A group of catholic men reacted by detonating the Houses of parliament. The instrument to be used for the devastation were kegs of gunpowder placed beneath the building. They were to be detonated once the king and other officials were within parliament. The offensive was expected on 5th November in The people behind the plot expected to assassinate the monarch in the act in addition to other renowned figures inside the house blamed for persecuting Catholics.
The expected attack was ineffective since law enforcement became aware of the conspiracy before Guy Fawkes could ignite the gunpowder.
It is alleged that the flopping of the Gunpowder Plot was as a result of disagreement among the plotters. A section of the planners were disturbed with the plan due to the devastation it would have effected, and one of them forewarned the rulers by sending an unsigned note. That night, those devoted to the Monarch jubilated the failed plot and his safety by starting bonfires and exploding fireworks. From that day, it grew to be a habitual affair that has been passed down the generations.
