This can last up to a week after the treatment while the initial healing process takes place. It may feel a bit like sunburn afterwards but there should be minimal discomfort. Redness and swelling are minimal. There should be minimal scabbing or flaking of the skin.
The complete healing process takes about weeks, at which time the true color of the tattoo is evident. During this process, your tattoo will soften and lighten. You may think you have lost too much color. Be patient, your skin is still regenerating and exfoliating. Wait at least 6 weeks to see the true color, as it seems to take on new strength. It is imperative to follow this guideline for the best results.
Everyone heals differently. This is normal for a healing tattoo. As the pigment oxidizes it will start to darken up again over the next weeks.

If you do not maintain, the color will lighten over time. Fading greatly depends on your skin type, lifestyle, sun exposure, pigment color used, broken capillaries, and iron deficiency. We suggest that if you want to maintain your lips so that they always look their best, plan on scheduling a touch up once a year for best results.
Use a good sunscreen on the lips if you plan to be in the sun for a prolonged period of time. Sun exposure will fade your cosmetic tattoo overtime. Sun exposure will make the color fade faster. A lip balm with SPF applied daily on tattooed area is needed to help keep the color true.
If you are planning a chemical peel, laser procedure or MRI scan, inform the technician of your cosmetic tattoo since there is iron-oxide in the pigments. Careful application must be taken to avoid affecting the tattooed area. If you are planning to have laser treatments, tell your laser specialist to avoid the pigmented area. Laser may cause pigment to turn black.
The use of chemical peels, acid peels or any brightening product that targets hyper-pigmentation used regularly on the forehead region can cause permanent eyebrows to fade prematurely. That evening I followed my aftercare protocol and cleansed my lips with a gentle sulphate-free, fragrance-free soap.
After patting dry I applied a thin layer of Aftercare Healing Gel. While washing my lips, I noticed they felt very strange - the sensation in my lips was completely off. After cleansing, I dabbed with a fresh, clean washcloth and it felt smooth as silk despite being textured. At this point, the pigment appeared slightly coral in color.
Day 2 was definitely an adjustment. One strange thing I noticed was that my lips were tingly and numb feeling, kind of like pins and needles without the pain. At mid-day the dryness began to set in, I was applying Aquatat frequently to help with the feeling of extreme dryness. The edges were the worst at this point, they felt like badly chapped lips.
By evening my lips had gone down in size and were nearly normal again. Lines began appearing on my lips as they had deflated from their giant size post-procedure. On Day 3, I woke up with my lips feeling extremely dry and tight. At this point, the scab was fully formed and much thicker than it had been on Day 2. This scab was beginning to crack in spots. It would sting in the corner of my mouth if I opened my mouth too wide to eat or yawn, and my lips would split if I moved my mouth too much while speaking or laughing.
I was having to press my fingers against my top lip if I was going to laugh just to stop this from happening. It was quite the sight around the office. A reputable artist will wear gloves and use brand-new needles, inks, and trays. Before going under the needle, ask your artist about their experience with lip tattoos specifically.
The artist should also have a portfolio of their work available so that you can determine if you like their techniques and artistry. Simply put, not all professionals who work with permanent ink are qualified to create lip tattoos. Despite using some of the most vibrant colors around, all tattoo ink eventually fades as your dermis and epidermis heal. The same is true of tattoos done on, around, or inside the lip area.
You can ask your tattoo artist for specific design or color recommendations that could help your ink last a bit longer.
